This trip is such a beauty! The carpark is hard to miss, situated right at the base of Bealey Village (a few minutes before Arthurs Pass if you’re travelling from CHCH). A short walk up the road gets you to the start of the 5.5km track to the hut. There’s some awesome exposed ridges and stunning alpine tarns on the ascent. Not to mention, the 360 degree views which include an awe-inspiring view up the Waimakariri Valley.

The climb up to the hut - being a spur - is gentle and presents little difficulty, even for little legs. Owing to this, it’s a really popular track for all ages! However, very few actually camp or stay overnight in the 6-bunk historic musterer’s hut. TOTALLY worth staying the night if you can. There’s drinking water at the hut and a toilet (older long-drop but clean enough).

The side trip up to Peak 1545 is usually a must for the incomparable views. Fog beat us to it this time around though!

Our good friends Julie, Jack & Charles joined us on this trip. Jack (12 years old), a budding videographer, was slinging his own camera for this trip. He and I ended up collaborating on this edit, which is why it’s a little different from my usual family adventure films. It was a real learning experience for me as both filming and editing is usually a solo journey. It was really cool ‘letting go’ (a little) and seeing what a fresh set of eyes could offer. I ended up embracing some of his more random ideas for visuals and sound effects which was actually heaps of fun. I hope you enjoy it 🎥❤️
