Cave Stream
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve // Castle Hill New Zealand
A must do for every adventurous kiwi and visitor!
My first 100% Go-Pro film 🤣...I ain't taking my good stuff in there!
Like with many of the trips we do, this one was definitely a bucket list one! We were hanging out until the kids were just big enough. I’ve been through a dozen times with Scouts and school students over the years so it was really special to finally be able to take my own children (& Nana) on this unique adventure!
With any caving adventure (especially ones that involve water), it’s critical and your responsibility to be prepared. A thermal layer + wetsuits are essential, along with torches (+ spare torches & lots of batteries) first-aid kit and survival blankets. Helmets aren’t essential but recommended for safe exploration of all the wee side tunnels. We took a thermos for half-time comfort and I always take a rope & carabiners. These can be useful with kids (& adventure granny) when the flow is higher than normal, to assist with the 3 mini waterfalls they need to scale on the way through. ALWAYS tell someone where you are going and what time you’re due out.
DO NOT ENTER if it has been raining.
My rule is not to go in if there’s been rain within 48 hours of the planned trip. The cave WILL flood and flood very quickly. Although the weather had been clear for us, a touch of snow melt in the mountains ensured a slightly enhanced adventure!
DOC has some very useful signage/info boards at the carpark for first timers & please visit their website here for more information.
